Basketball hoops and basketball goals are available in a number of both portable and wall mounted systems. The type you should choose will depend on the type of location where basketball is being played and how often your games are scheduled.

If you are looking to add basketball hoops and basketball goals to a gym, you can choose to install a Wallmount system like the WallMount68. The advantage to choosing this type of system is that you don’t have to calculate your extension requirements before you order. The product does allow you to adjust the backboard extension between 6 and 8′ during installation so that you can match it to the court markings on the floor. In addition, you can use any backboard you choose with this system.

In a situation where you like the idea of having a Wallmount basketball hoops and basketball goals system but space is at a premium, consider the FoldaMount46. You still have the look of a wall-mounted system, but you can move it flush against the wall during times when the gym is being used for volleyball or other sports. You get a quality unit with the flexibility you need for multiple sports.

The Rampage is an example of a portable basketball hoops and basketball goals unit. The height can be adjusted between 6′6″ and 10″, depending on the ages and skill levels of the players involved. Adjusting the height is a simple matter of using the unit’s crank system. The Rampage can be moved from place to place easily, which makes it a good choice whether you are moving it across the driveway or to a different location in the gym. To help keep players safe and free from injury, the base and stem are outfitted with thick vinyl padding, which is available in several colors.

Adjustable basketball hoops and basketball goals are another option on the market. For example, the Jam system is mounted on a heavy gauge 4″ x 4″ post that has the advantage of being sturdier and less likely to deteriorate over time than posts that are made up of multiple pieces. The rim height can be adjusted anywhere from 7′ to 10′, as desired. A breakaway goal and a net are included in the package. The Jam can be used with several types of acrylic backboards, and pole padding and backboard padding can be added as needed.

The Legend is an example of a fixed-height system. The post is placed 66″ behind the backboard as a safety feature. The Legend is made up of two pieces: a post and an extension arm. You do have the option of attaching the extension arm to the post with high tensile bolts at the height you choose. When you choose the Legend system, you also get to choose from several types of rims and backboards, including ones made of tempered glass. Youngsters playing basketball will enjoy the fact that the backboard looks similar to the type used for college and professional games.

It’s all about March Madness. The rush of excitement. The thrill of victory. The crushing agony of defeat. However, first teams must play out a full season before being selected. In the grand scheme of things, only a handful of the college teams are selected to the big dance. Most get there by winning their conference or the championship tournament for their conference. I bring this up, because it’s important to know. A successful sports bettor needs to know what teams are motivated and what teams are just going through the motions.

It would be a grave mistake to assume that a team with an average record is playing for nothing. Many teams play hard throughout the season, because they have a shot at the NCAA tournament even if they are low in the conference. Another fallacy that kills sports bettors is betting NCAA basketball like it’s the NBA. You have to remember that NCAA basketball is comprised of young adults, typically 18-21. Most don’t possess the ability to perform at a high level, to think under pressure and to rise to the occasion against all odds.

While colleges fill their basketball teams with the best talent they have available, that does not mean the team will have even one really good player. Some programs out there are just plain bad. Only a small sample of players at the college level will be drafted by the NBA. Most are just street balers going through their college years. College basketball players are more susceptible to emotional swings than NBA players. For this reason, you must pay attention to any recent news and events swirling around the team.

For those that don’t already know, college basketball works on the spread system. For example, let’s say you have UCLA playing at Duke and Duke is -8. You have two options. You can take Duke and lay the 8 points, which means Duke must win by more than 8 for you to win—8 is a tie and only wins on some parlay cards. Your other option is to take UCLA and the 8 points. As long as UCLA win or does not lose by more than 7, you win. If they lose by 8, you tie.

College basketball betting also features the totals line. Not every game played will have a totals line at every sports book. The totals line is the total number of points scored by both participants at an event. For example, if the totals line was 130, you could bet the over or the under. Take the over and you want both teams to combine for 130 or more points. Take the under and you want both teams to combine for 130 or fewer points. Totals lines in college basketball can be both profitable and tricky at the same time.

College basketball can be extremely profitable. To be a long-term winner, it’s important that you not only understand the game of basketball, but the college scene as well. Spend time looking for news and information about the team and players. Is there a scandal at the school? Did the team just come off of a miracle win? Events can swing college basketball greatly. Players are more apt to be swung by emotions. Good luck on the hardwood.

When choosing an adjustable basketball goal there are several options available when it comes to the adjustment “method” for moving the basket up and down. Below you will find a synopsis of the five most popular adjustment styles and the benefits of each.

When choosing an adjustable basketball goal there are several options available when it comes to the adjustment “method” for moving the basket up and down. Below you will find a synopsis of the five most popular adjustment styles and the benefits of each.

STICK ADJUST – The first and most basic adjustment method is often referred to as the “stick adjust.” This is a basketball goal that is moved up and down by using a broom handle, dowel rod or other type of stick. To move the goal down, a broom handle is inserted into the adjustment latch located directly behind the backboard. When the latch is released, the weight of the backboard and goal is transferred to the stick and the basket is lowered to its lowest height, generally 7 1/2′. The goal can be adjusted to other rim heights by using the same stick to push up on the bottom of the backboard. The backboard can be adjusted in six inch increments from 7 1/2′ to 10′. While raising the backboard, you will hear a “click” at each height setting. The stick adjust method is very quick and a great choice for economy. The stick adjust style is also a great choice for the family looking for a goal that is quick and easy for dad or mom to regulate, but not the kids. Generally, stick adjust units are too difficult for kids under the age of 13 to adjust on their own. As with most adjustable goal types, the stick adjust style is available in both lower end as well as higher end quality versions. One side note to point out is that generally the higher end stick adjust models are manufactured with an adjustable arm system that is U-bolted to the vertical post. This allows the adjustable arm system to be assembled to the post at a lower height on the post, the unit can then utilize its 2 1/2′ range of adjustment to meet lower rim heights if desired.

PIN ADJUST – The second style of adjustable goal is know as “pin adjust.” This adjustment method is also very quick and reasonably easy for older children. The pin adjust is a spring balanced basketball goal (some styles use a weighted handle instead of springs). There is a removable pin located on the backside of the basketball post. The weight of the backboard and rim is counterbalanced by springs or a weighted handle. After the pin is removed, the backboard and rim can easily be moved up and down in six inch increments. Push the pin back into the handle at the desired playing height. Pin adjust style units are generally adjustable from 10′ down to 7′. Pin adjust units are easy to move up and down and very safe. When the pin is removed the backboard will not move unless pressure is applied to the handle. Typically, 4th grade and up can operate pin adjust style units.

FRONT CRANK – The third style category is the “front crank”. This adjustment style is easy for anyone over the age of 10. Front crank style units have a screw actuator mounted in the extension arm system located on the front side of the basketball post. A separate handle with a hook on one end is provided with the basketball goal. The actuator is equipped with a loop at the bottom end. The hook on the handle is inserted into the loop on the actuator. Then by twisting the crank handle the actuator extends or retracts resulting in the raising or lowering of the backboard. The front crank style basketball goal is a good choice particularly if you want to mount your basketball goal up against a wall or other obstruction that prevents rear access to the post. One downside to front crank style goals is that since the handle is separate from the basketball goal, it may become lost. As with most adjustment styles, front crank units can be found in lower end, lower cost brands as well as higher end, more costly versions.

REAR CRANK – The “rear crank” adjustment style is easily the most popular style of adjustment. Rear crank adjustable basketball goals utilize an adjustment actuator similar to that used on a front crank style unit except the actuator is mounted on the back side of the basketball post. The rear crank has a built in handle that can be turned clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the basket. The handle is typically located approx. 4′ above ground making it easy to reach for young children. Rear crank units are most commonly adjustable from 10′ down to 7 1/2′, but units that adjust lower are also available. Rear crank styles are the easiest type of goal to adjust for any age group. Again, rear cranking goals can be found in low end as well as high end versions.

GAS ASSIST – Basketball units that utilize gas filled cylinders to provide the lifting force required to raise the weight of the basket are known as “gas assist.” These units employ a single gas filled cylinder or group of cylinders on the back side of the basketball post to “lift” the backboard and rim when a trigger handle is squeezed on the post. Gas assist units are an effort to blend the convenience of the rear crank with the speed of the pin adjust. Generally, these units seem to work reasonably well for adults, but are too difficult for kids 6th grade or younger. Higher end units with heavier backboards may require a grown adult to raise the basket. High end and low end models are available in gas assist styles.

There are still adjustable basketball goals on the market that utilize a cable attached to a winch that is wound up or down to raise or lower the basket. Though this style was dominant in the early years of adjustable goal development, it has mostly been phased out as better, safer options have evolved.

If you have decided that you want to coach a basketball team you will want to start with the bare minimum and that is to know and understand the essentials of the game and the core concepts. Once you grasp this part of coaching you will be able to get all of the players on the same page and coordinate a game that everyone loves to participate in as well as to watch.

Basic concepts include the obvious, such as having to opposing teams. Although there will be more players on your team, only five are allowed on the playing court at one time. The goal here, although it may seem simple, is to have each team work together to try and get the basketball thrown through the hoop. Sounds easy enough but you have to remember and never underestimate the opposing team’s defense. Getting the ball through the hoop is how points are scored and like most other games, the high scoring teams, wins. Again, sounds fairly simple but now you have to factor in the rules of what is allowed and what is not. This always makes things just a bit tougher.

For example, when the ball is in play, a holding call will be placed on the player by the referee if the ball is held too long. This gives the team a penalty and allows the opposing team to either gain control of the ball or in some cases the referee gives the opposing team what is called a free shot. During the free shot a designated player is allowed to throw the ball without any interference from opposition. The ball has to be thrown from a specified distance as well. Dribbling is a huge part of the game of basketball. Dribbling is the fast short strokes that a player bounces the ball continuously while it is in motion or play. The dribbling also has to occur within a specified area of the playing court at all times or the referee will call the play or the ball out of bounds.

Basketball has been enjoyed in the United States since around 1891. It was developed for the intent of giving rugby players a way to stay in shape during their off season. Back then, rugby was a very popular sport but it did not take long for the country to embrace the game of basketball and soon after the YMCA gymnasiums were formally accepting the game as well as developing regulations and rules that are still adhered to today. Basketball is now an international sport and is recognized by the National Basketball Association (NBA). Basketball is also accepted and enjoyed on a professional level where literally millions of spectators pay for tickets to entertain the sport of basketball.

Because of the explosive growth of basketball coaching has also become a multi million dollar business as well. Coaches have had to literally develop an art to coaching by teaching teams how to interact and work as a team towards the same objectives.

The ability to dribble a basketball is a valuable skill to have as a basketball player, especially if you plan on being a point guard. However, the dribble is only of value in certain situations. Do not dribble the ball, if you can do anything else to advance the offense.

The dribble is a valuable individual maneuver when used properly. When used incorrectly it works against the purpose of the offensive.

When to dribble the ball:

1) It should be used to get the ball in the clear in the back court;

2) To bring the ball from back court to front court if the defense is already in position;

3) On short drives to the basket; and,

4) To get away from a pressing defense, or to pull defensive men away from the basket.

In general, observe these principles when dribbling the ball:

1) Use the dribble to get the ball out of congested areas.

2) Use the dribble to score from close range.

3) Use the dribble to carry the attack from the back court to the defense in the front court.

4) Use the dribble when it is the only sensible maneuver possible. Don’t forsake the pass.

How to Dribble a basketball.

It takes a certain amount of skill to dribble a basketball correctly. Skill, of course, it based on proper technique:

1) When bouncing a basketball, you should keep your fingers loosely spread.

2) The ball should be under control of your fingertips. A downward motion of the wrist and arm and pressure from your fingers drives the ball toward the floor.

3) As the ball comes back to your hand, your fingers and wrist should “give” slightly before being pressed down again.

When dribbling the ball, you should run with your feet wider apart than normal. Your knees should be bent, the trunk of your body inclined forward at the waist; your head should be up and eyes looking forward. The forearm of your dribbling hand should be parallel with the floor.

When advancing the ball, you should bounce it away from you at an angle. In effect, you want to catch up to the ball as it comes off the floor.

The bounces should be short and low.

When you change direction while dribbling the basketball, alternate your hands (right hand for a sharp left drive; left hand for a sharp right drive).

When you are being guarded closely, you should use the hand that is farthest from your opponent to dribble the ball.

Remember that once you have stopped your dribble, you are stuck. You cannot move again until you have taken a shot at the basket or passed to a teammate. Save the dribble until you need it.

The Fake and the Drive

Consider this scenario: Imagine for a moment that you have just caught a pass in the front court, and only one man stands between you and the basket. What should you?

Should you stand still and wait for help from your four other teammates? Of course not. If you wait for your teammates, they will be bringing their defensive men with them. Instead of two men in the front court, you will have 10.

Instead, you want to keep the offense going. To do so, you will have to choose one of several alternatives. If the defensive man is playing you loose (several steps away), you might draw him out by dribbling directly toward him and, at the proper moment, take a jump shot. At medium range, you might take a deliberate set shot and then run hard towards the offensive basket and “fight” for a possible rebound.

On the other hand, if the defensive man is guarding you very closely, you have got to fake and drive around him.

A good defensive player will be standing directly between you and the basket. To move him, you must make him think that you are going in one direction, while you will actually be going in the opposite direction.

 Here is the basic move:

Hold the ball as you would to make a chest pass. Take a sharp, diagonal step left with your left foot. Thrust the ball, your head and your shoulders over that foot, just as though you were going to start a dribble in that direction. You have now established your right foot as your pivot foot.

After your left foot hits the floor, twist your body to the right.

To start the drive and dribble to the right, momentarily pull your weight back on your pivot foot. Now, take a long step diagonally right and forward with your left foot, pushing hard off the right. As you take this stride to the right, bring the ball to the right side of your body and take the first (and successive) dribble with the right hand. In this way, you will put your body between the defensive man and the ball.

The right hand continues the dribble after the initial bounce of the basketball and the drive should be directly toward the basket. Here is the breakdown again, starting with the foot movements:

Step diagonally and sharply left with the left foot.

As your left foot strikes the floor, pivot to the right.

Momentarily pull your weight back to the right foot.

If possible, swing your left foot to the left and rear of the defensive man’s left foot.

As for the ball, the first bounce is made with the right hand. In effect, you shift the ball from one side of your body to the other, then continue forward.

Reverse all these moves when faking right and going left.

Naturally, if the defensive man does not fall for the fake, keep going in that direction. Try to make this fake and drive as soon as you catch the pass and before the defensive man has time to think about what you are going to do.

If you are not sure of whether you can shoot over the man or go around, fake a set shot as a way of getting your opponent to commit himself. If the defensive man leaves his feet to block your “shot”, you can go around him easily while he is still in the air and before he hits the floor. If he charges you, use the fake and drive.

In the event that you cannot move the player guarding you and do not feel confident about shooting over him, keep possession of the ball until you can make a pass.

Whenever you are driving to the basket or dribbling the ball down court, get to the “inside” of your man; do not help him by staying to the “outside” of him where you can be guarded easily. Visit http://www.basketball-drills-and-tips.com to find more information on this topic, and to download a FREE copy of our Basketball E-Book ($29 Value) titled, “The Fundamentals of Basketball: A beginner’s guide for coaches and players.”

While not really an offensive basketball shooting move, free throws are very important as they still contribute points to the scoreboards. It has been proven many times over that free throws can be crucial in important games. Such fact warrants that every basketball player should be accurate from the foul line, or else end up like Shaquille O’Neal who, during his younger days in the NBA, was the target of consistent fouling to make him go to the freethrow line. His poor freethrow shooting made him a liability during tight ball games.

While it can be an easy shot for most players, especially those with a knack for midrange and 3-point shooting, a freethrow can also be the most difficult to make. Players who have low self-confidence or can be easily broken psychologically experience difficulties in making a freethrow, even if they are exceptionally good shooters during game time. Mental pressure does come into play during freethrows – crowds booing, other team players saying things for distraction, and even the gravity of situation can spell a lot on a person’s freethrow accuracy.

Apart from the usual, basic method of freethrow practice, there are several basketball shooting drills that are effective in increasing freethrow accuracy, though in general these drills and basketball shooting workouts are used to improve a player’s midrange shooting.

To The Foul Line

This drill is designed for novices who are starting to work with their freethrows. There are three different shooting spots in this drill, all places in front and straight from the basket. Position A is located just a foot in front of the basket. Position B is slightly farther away, just between Position A and the foul line. Position C is at the freethrow line.

For this particular drill, you will need two players and at least one basketball.

Instructions:

Player 1 will start from Position A and try to make as many shots as possible within 1 minute. Player 2 will grab the rebounds and pass them to Player 1. While shooting, coaches should emphasize the proper basketball shooting form when doing the drill. Since this is a freethrow exercise, coaches should also instill to the player that he should not jump and must remain planted on his feet.

If Player 1 is able to make 20 shots within 1 minute, he can now move on to the second spot and repeat the same procedure. If he makes another set of 20 shots within the same amount of time, he can then move to the freethrow line.

The goal of this drill is to teach basketball novices the basics of freethrow shooting and getting them accustomed to take shots without jumping. This drill also helps them to adjust their strength when shooting near or far from the basket. By gradually moving them away from the basket, they get more and more proficient with not just their freethrow shooting, but overall shooting skills in general.

But accuracy is only half of the equation as a player must also be tough mentally to block out any distractions. Teaching kids some useful tips like having a mantra or a habit to help them relax before taking a freethrow shot improves the players’ chance of making the shot.

Since the early days of the twentieth century, people have enjoyed playing the game of basketball. Indeed, in the United States, college basketball has gained quite a following nationwide. Now, with the immense popularity of the NBA and its superstars, many students are looking to get noticed in college basketball recruiting, to play in college teams and even perhaps in the NBA.

Dr. James Naismith is recognized as the inventor of basketball. Naismith was born in 1861 in Ramsay, located near Almonte in Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was derived from a child’s game known as duck-on-a-rock, which he played during his school days outside his schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to dislodge what was called a “duck” off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it.

Naismith served in McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as its Athletic Director. He then moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, which is where basketball eventually was born. During his stay in Springfield, Naismith became immersed in finding a sport for the students at the School for Christian Workers that was suitable to play indoors during the winter. He wanted to create a game that relied on skill as opposed to one that depended exclusively on strength.

In addition to the creation of the sport, Naismith graduated as a medical doctor, focusing himself on sports physiology and (which would later be known as) sports science. He was also a Presbyterian minister, with a deep curiosity in philosophy. The first basketball game was played using a soccer ball and two peach baskets as the goals.

Naismith was able to witness basketball being brought into in many nations through the YMCA movement, which began as early as 1893. In 1936, basketball was introduced at the Berlin Olympics. Today, college basketball is played in campuses throughout the Unite States, and basketball has come to be known as one of the world’s most popular sports.

The Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both students in college basketball and coaches involved in the process of college basketball recruiting. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. D1Athletes is an online community wherein high school athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need during college basketball recruiting. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.
